Electric Boilers

Changing how you heat and run your home can feel overwhelming, and with eco news articles appearing daily about what the best thing to do is, it can be hard to know where to start. We want to help change that, so are sharing this information with our customers to help them understand their options. By understanding how alternatives to gas boilers, such as electric, work we can help empower our customers to make informed decisions.

How Electric Boilers Work

The fundamental process and workings of an electric boiler involves water passing through an electric element to heat it up.

A good comparison for an electric boiler is to look at how a kettle heats up water. The element inside the kettle, once plugged in and switched on will heat up the water within it, which is essentially how an electric boiler works. Like a gas boiler, once the water is heated up, it is passed through your radiators to heat your home.

As with gas boilers, there are variations of electric boiler types that have been designed to suit different needs and home styles. Here is an overview:

What Are The Running Costs

Now you have an overview of the different type of boilers available, we’d like to outline potential overall running costs associated with electric boilers. This is important so that you get an indication of the entire process and cost. Without that, your impact on the environment may not be as ‘green’ as you first thought.

The first thing to be made aware of is that electric boilers tend to have higher running costs as they are powered solely by electricity. If you are not a self-sufficient energy home, i.e., you rely on the national grid for your electricity, you may notice a spike in your electricity bills.

To help give you an idea of the potential size of the spike you are likely to see, let’s compare unit costs. Running a gas boiler in your home, on average will total just under 4p/kWh, whereas electricity can be closer to 15p/kWh. Nearly four times the price per unit.

However, choosing to run a greener home with less environmental impactful home will help preserve our planet, and as the nation starts to change its behaviours across the board, it is likely that prices will continue to get more competitive. Finally, whilst it’s important that as a nation we start to move away from gas boilers which rely on fossil fuels to run, currently, most of the nation’s electricity is generated using fossil fuels as well. If you want to run a greener home and want to do so by installing an electric boiler, you should also investigate ‘green’ energy providers. Green energy providers tend to avoid using fossil fuels and will help make sure your change of boiler has the right impact. Alternatively, you can look to install solar panels to help create a ‘greener’ home

In the coming years the UK’s energy production aims to continue to reduce its impact on the environment, but for now you may need to take things into your own hands a bit more to ensure you really are lowering your carbon footprint as best you can.
